Becoming a corrections professional means:
 To see yourself as a person of integrity and to live at integrity level. One definition of integrity is to do the right thing when no one is looking.
 To treat youthful offenders with dignity and respect. As one corrections professional put it, treat residents as you would want your father or brother to be treated in a correctional context.
 To model positive behaviors. One way this can be done is to adhere to the ethical principles set forth by the American Correctional Association.
 To be a person committed to a learning model and to be open to new ways of doing things. Such a person seeks to learn throughout his or her career and is always willing to pursue all the training opportunities available.
 To believe that it is possible to make a difference. Believe that you can have an impact and are not limited by what others have done.
 To keep your personal stuff from getting into the way. Do not let your personal problems or issues keep you from doing an effective job.
 To maintain a clean institution; cleanliness and orderliness of the facility are absolute necessities in correctional leadership.
 To remember the importance of accountability, attention to detail, and following the schedule.
 To refuse to accept unethical behavior from fellow staff members.
 To stay positive and do what is possible to create a workplace that is safe, healthy, and free of harassment in any form.
