Abdominal fat is associated with a greater risk for hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer than if the fat is in the thighs, buttocks, and hips. Pear-shaped bodies have lower risk for disease than the apple-shaped body. Measuring waist circumference can detect risk of disease even in a person of healthy weight.
