Jennie, age 34, had squamous cell carcinoma diagnosed 2 years ago. It began as a scar on the side of her face resulting from a car accident, when she was a child. She became concerned and visited her doctor when it began to turn reddish-purple. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and that it was malignant. She underwent surgical removal of the lesion and a portion of the area around her mouth. Cosmetic repair will be done when the cancer growth has ceased.

Squamous cell carcinoma affects the squamous cells that are in the upper layer of the skin. Most cases arise from chronic exposure to sunlight but may also occur where skin has been injured-burns, scars, or long-standing sores.
