Eating too much fiber in a short time can produce discomfort, abdominal gas, and diarrhea. Fiber can also obstruct the gastrointestinal (GI) tract if intake exceeds 50 grams/day. Insoluble fiber has binders that can prevent the absorption of minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium.
