Discuss the metabolism of glucose. What is the function of glucose in the body? Which food sources are needed to obtain glucose? What controls the process of glucose metabolism? What does the body do with the glucose that is not needed?

Answer to Question 1

Glucose is the form of carbohydrate that all others are converted into for eventual metabolism. Glucose is found in corn syrup and in some fruits and vegetables. The central nervous system, red blood cells, and the brain use only glucose as fuel; therefore, a continuous source is needed. Unused glucose is converted to glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles. If the volume exceeds the amount that can be used or stored in the muscles or liver, it is stored as adipose tissue.
