If there are too few carbohydrates in the diet to fulfill the energy requirement, an abnormally large amount of fat is metabolized. If sufficient fats are not available, fat oxidation in the cells is not complete and substances called ketones are produced. The ketones accumulate in the blood and urine and upset the acid-base balance.
