Answer to Question 1

The majority of cases of gestational diabetes are able to manage with nutrition intervention alone. If, however, glucose levels do not meet target, then medication may be necessary. The only oral medications used in pregnancy are metformin and glyburide. If insulin is needed, it can be dosed as a long-acting basal insulin alone or a combination of basal and meal-time insulin.
