Answer to Question 1

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin and typically occurs by age 30. Gestational diabetes has its onset between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy. A woman's body is still producing insulin; however, the pregnancy hormones produced by the placenta are causing insulin resistance.

Answer to Question 2

Yogurt and cheese are both high in calcium. Powdered nonfat dry milk can be used in cooking. Puddings, custards, and baked foods can be made with milk. Small fish (such as sardines) and salmon are rich in calcium.
