The primary tastes are sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and savory (umami). In lab, the tonic water tasted acidic and bitter.

The triangle test has three coded samples that are presented simultaneously, and the panelist is asked to identify the odd sample. One advantage of this test is the small number of samples to analyze and the comparison of two particular products. It is an effective test to assess taste similarities and differences. A disadvantage is that a product's appearance must be the same or it can affect the sensory panelists' evaluation. There is also room for individual biases.
