When entering a room, Samoans walk around to greet each person with a smile and handshake. Eye contact is expected. Both Samoans and Tongans are concerned that all participants in a conversation be at an equal level. A reserved conversational style and the desire to maintain harmony may result in some Pacific Islanders enduring pain rather than expressing it. Judgmental or accusatory attitudes regarding lifestyle (especially weight gain) may cause Pacific Islanders to avoid further counseling.
