It is important that children avoid the medications that are used to control blood cholesterol because such medications can act on liver metabolism and affect how their bodies handle fats and other nutrients. Children still need essential fatty acids for tissue development and moderate total fat intakes for energy. If a child's blood cholesterol levels remain high in spite of changes in their diet and activity over 6 months or longer, then certain drugs may be used to lower their cholesterol levels.
