Answer to Question 1

You could suggest that she modify her diet to reduce her total calories by 500-1000 per day if her BMI is 35 or greater or 300-500 per day if her BMI is between 27 and 35 . She may find that this reduction is far easier to follow than a drastic reduction of calories. She is less likely to feel deprived and is less likely to overeat. A total calorie intake of 1000-1200 cal/day will permit her to consume a nutritionally adequate diet. She still needs minerals such as magnesium and potassium to help control her blood pressure.
You could suggest that she increase her physical activity to expend 100-200 more calories per day. She will not have to add a major fitness routine and will be more likely to be able to follow this. An increase in activity of 200 calories per day coupled with an intake reduction of 300-500 calories per day will create a deficit of energy that will result in the loss of body fat. She could take the stairs instead of the elevator and she could park her car a little bit farther out.
