Tell your father that moderation is the key here Butter contains more saturated fats and cholesterol since it is made from animal products. Hard margarines, from plant sources, can contain significant amounts of hydrogenated fats, which can pose the same risks as saturated fats. Softer margarines contain much less hydrogenated fats and may be a healthier choice.
You may want to suggest alternatives to butter or margarine as well. Perhaps your father could cook his eggs with olive oil instead of butter. He could use yogurt or salsa on his baked potato instead of margarine or butter.
