The Mediterranean diet incorporates more nuts, fruits, and whole grains than a typical American diet. These foods contribute more fiber, vitamins, and minerals without a lot of calories or saturated fats.
The Mediterranean diet also incorporates far less red meats and more fish (with healthy omega-3 fatty acids) than the typical American diet. This also reduces the amount of saturated fats consumed each day.
