You go to your grandmother's house and when you walk inside, you smell freshly baked apple pie. Your mouth begins to water and your stomach begins to rumble. You are hungry but you didn't really pay attention to your hunger until you got inside of your grandmother's house. Describe how your senses have stimulated your digestive system to notice the hunger.

Answer to Question 1

The senses of sight and smell can send a signal to the hypothalamus in the brain. This portion of the brain also monitors the body for available water and nutrients in the blood. If the blood glucose or amino acid levels are low, the hypothalamus will send signals to the digestive system. This will cause the stomach to release its digestive juices and it will start churning. This produces hunger pangs that will encourage you to eat.
