Discuss what is meant by sarcopenic obesity and considerations for older adults when contemplating weight loss.

Answer to Question 1

Sarcopenic obesity occurs when weight that is lost contains more lean tissue than when it is regained. In other words, weight is lost as muscle and gained as fat. Weight loss to ameliorate obesity can be harmful if there is no plan for preventing regain or for maintaining muscle and organ mass. A healthy eating program is based on sufficient nutrient-dense calories to support a gradual loss of fat and minimize bone or muscle tissue loss. Physical activity is the only way to prevent muscle loss.
