Answer to Question 1

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an essential role in facilitating intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus that is required to maintain adequate serum levels of these minerals. Vitamin D is also essential for optimal bone formation. Vitamin D adequacy should be assessed for all adolescents of high-risk groups, particularly those who live in northern climates, who have limited sun exposure, who have lactose intolerance or milk allergy, who have developmental disabilities that may limit outdoor activities, or who have darkly pigmented skin or frequently use sunscreen.
