Factors that can affect growth rate during pregnancy include the intrauterine environment, particularly the adequacy of the placenta in delivering nutrients; the presence of toxins such as viruses, alcohol, or maternal medications; the depletion of a needed nutrient, such as iron or folic acid; and fetal-origin errors in cell migration or formation of organs, whether or not a cause is known.
