Answer to Question 1

SNAP distributes electronic benefit transfer
cards
that recipients use to purchase food.
The average monthly SNAP allotment
is 126 per person. 126 divided by
30 days/month 5 4.20, so the recipient
would have this much extra to spend on
food each day, or 29.40 to spend each week.
(Note, however, that the practical benefits also
depend on the recipient's access to grocery
stores or farmers markets where healthy foods
can be purchased inexpensively.)

Answer to Question 2

A

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
