Answer to Question 1

Glucose provides muscles with an important energy source.
Under conditions of low oxygen availability, glycolysis
can metabolize glucose to provide a quick source of ATP.
Although glycolysis can rapidly generate small amounts
of ATP, the system is not sustainable. This is because the
end-product of glucose metabolism is pyruvate, which is
converted to lactic acid. The majority of lactic acid dissociates
into lactate and hydrogen ions. The accumulation of
hydrogen ions causes muscles to fatigue.
