Answer to Question 1

Utilize the many programs and services in place in the U.S. to alleviate food insecurity. Start at the local level with charitable organizations such as local food banks, food recovery programs, or local food kitchens. Check eligibility for federally funded food assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC, or the school lunch or breakfast programs. Be alert for families who may need support and assistance, especially those with young children or single parents. Grass-roots efforts such as sharing and pooling resources, especially excess food, and providing food to those in need are very effective when neighbors help neighbors in local communities.

Answer to Question 2

A malnourished child will grow up to be an adult that was not able to reach his or her maximum growth and development. As an adult, he or she will have a reduced capacity for physical work and lower productivity. This has far-reaching consequences for the economic stability of a whole society. Poverty and hunger go hand in hand, and breaking the cycle will go a long way to improving the standard of living for a whole society.
