Answer to Question 1

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: formerly known as the Food Stamp Program. Administered by the USDA. Low-income households are given an electronic benefit transfer card to purchase food only (227 per month).
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children: Administered by the USDA. Provides coupons to purchase a variety of WIC-approved food in grocery stores. Provides health assistance and nutrition education to eligible pregnant women and mothers of young infants and children.
National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program: Administered by the USDA. Provide nutritionally balanced meals to school-aged children, either free or at a reduced price, for all who qualify.

Answer to Question 2

Food insecurity in U.S. doesn't typically lead to hunger or nutrient deficiencies but is emotionally damaging, especially for children. Children raised in food insecure households tend to have more difficulties in school, earn lower scores on standardized tests, miss more days of school, and exhibit more behavioral problems and depression, including increased risk of suicide.
