Answer to Question 1

Bone mineral density and mass can be measured using a variety of instruments. A DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometer) emits a very low amount of x-rays and can produce a detailed picture of the body. DEXA testing can provide a painless and accurate measurement of bone mass and bone mineral density and can distinguish among different areas of the body.

Answer to Question 2

Women are at greater risk for a number of reasons, such as loss of estrogen production after menopause and overall smaller body size.
