Answer to Question 1

No; in fact, bottled water often lacks fluoride, so if tap water is fluoridated then not drinking tap water may increase risk for tooth decay in children. In addition, environmental costs associated with bottled water outweigh any nutritional benefits. The only exception is if local tap water becomes contaminated (as in case of a water main break or natural disaster).

Answer to Question 2

Sports drinks would be preferable to water during endurance training and competition, in order to help athletes prevent dehydration and provide them with some needed energy. Water is a preferable drink for everyone else. Sports drinks offer no enhanced performance for other athletes unless the athlete is participating in high-intensity competition in a hot environment. It has been suggested that sports drinks may be helpful for use in small children when consumption of water is challenging and the taste of the sports drink may improve intake.
