Answer to Question 1

Consuming high amounts of dairy products may be associated with decreased risk of chronic diseases: heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Protective effects of adequate calcium consumption from dairy products on bone disease are well accepted by medical experts. Increased dairy consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure (effect of calcium and milk protein). A decreased risk for breast, prostate, and colon cancer resulting from increased dairy consumption is most likely due to calcium, vitamin D, certain proteins, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) found in dairy products. Increased dairy product consumption has been shown, at least in some studies, to support weight loss in adults and promote fat loss and muscle gain in exercisers.

Answer to Question 2

Calcium not associated with skeletal mass is critical for life. Calcium cooperates with vitamin K to stimulate blood clotting, and is necessary for muscle contraction and transmission of nerve impulses. Calcium is needed for healthy vision, regulation of blood glucose, and cell differentiation. It is a cofactor for several enzymes needed for energy metabolism.
