Answer to Question 1

Many environmental, genetic, and lifestyle factors can influence how much vitamin D you make endogenously. People who live in an area with persistent volcanic ash or overcast skies may require either more sun exposure to synthesize adequate amounts of vitamin D or a diet that provides adequate amounts of the few foods that contain vitamin D, for example, egg yolks, butter, whole milk, fatty fish, and mushrooms.

Answer to Question 2

Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption, so adding vitamin D to milk, a good source of calcium, helps to provide the body with the calcium it needs and the vitamin D needed for its absorption simultaneously. Fortifying breakfast cereals that are typically eaten with milk is another way to try to ensure that the calcium and vitamin D the body needs are both available.
