Increased risk of nutritional deficiencies, dumping syndrome, and other complications from surgery. Death rate within one year of surgery is 1-5.

People with fewer, enlarged adipocytes may have less difficulty maintaining weight loss than those with a greater number of smaller adipocytes. Once the number of adipocytes has increased, it usually remains higher than before despite any subsequent weight loss.
