Answer to Question 1

Approximately 20 of heavy drinkers develop fatty livers. In some people, over time, the fat in the liver obstructs blood flow, which deprives liver cells of oxygen and nutrients and results in cell death. If fibrous scar tissue forms in the liver, the condition is called cirrhosis.

Answer to Question 2

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which is an alcohol-induced dementia, results from heavy use of alcohol. Alcohol can interfere with the absorption and metabolism of thiamin, which produces a nutrient deficiency that damages nerves in the brain, resulting in damage to short-term memory.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).
