Answer to Question 1

Moderate drinkers tend to live longer than nondrinkers (and those who drink heavily)
 Associated with decreased risk for:
o cardiovascular disease (dose-dependent increases in HDL-cholesterol levels; dose-dependent decreases in triglycerides; anti-inflammatory effect)
o strokes (decreases levels of fibrinogen, which promotes blood clot formation; increases levels of an enzyme that dissolves blood clots)
o gallstones
o age-related memory loss
o type 2 diabetes (increases insulin sensitivity  lowering blood glucose)

Answer to Question 2

 Decreased fatty acid breakdown (-oxidation)
Increased uptake of fatty acids from the blood
Increased fatty acid synthesis and triglyceride formation (lipogenesis)
Decreased transport of triglycerides from the liver into the blood
