Mercury is a protein denaturing agent. It can disrupt disulfide bonds and thus the tertiary structure of proteins. High levels of mercury exposure can cause numbness, hearing loss, visual problems, difficulty walking, and severe emotional and cognitive difficulties. The potential for damage due to exposure to mercury is highest for growing fetuses and young children.
