The four types are type 1, type 2, gestational, and secondary. Similarities: underlying cause related to insulin resistance or complete lack of insulin results in the body's inability to regulate glucose metabolism. All require medical management and nutritional intervention. Differences: Different etiologies, typical age of onset varies, may be temporary or life-long, and interventions can include (1) diet and exercise only; (2) diet, exercise, and glucose-lowering medication; or (3) diet, exercise, and insulin injections, depending on the type of diabetes.
