Fiber contains -glycosidic bonds that are resistant to digestive enzymes, so fiber passes intact (undigested) through the small intestine to the large intestine. Intestinal bacteria break down the fiber, producing gas, lipids, and other substances that nourish the cells that line the colon. Fiber prevents the overgrowth of unhealthy (pathogenic) bacteria by promoting the growth of healthy bacteria.
