It is theorized that HFCS's high fructose-to-glucose ratio elicits a physiological response that can lead to unwanted weight gain. It's believed that fructose is more efficiently converted to fat than other types of sugar. Few studies have demonstrated a metabolic difference between the body's response to HFCS and sucrose. There is no credible evidence that HFCS and sucrose impact the body's response to satiety, food intake, and subsequent energy intake. Excess consumption of energy-dense food and beverages containing HFCS is linked to obesity.
