Water is poured into plastic jugs and the jugs are placed on black-covered roofs and allowed to heat for several hours. If the heat from the solar radiation raises the temperature of the water to more than 50C (122F), the water becomes safe to drink and common waterborne bacteria such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery are destroyed.
