Normal cells become cancerous when DNA is damaged, resulting in uncontrolled cell division.
Cancer results from the abnormal growth of cells. The abnormal growth and division of cells form a mass of
mutated cells called a tumor. Tumors are classified as either benign (abnormal growth but not life-threatening) or
malignant (cancerous cells that are life-threatening because they will eventually spread to other tissues and disrupt
organ function).
