Answer to Question 1

Your energy needs comprise your basal metabolism (BMR), the thermic effect of food (TEF), and the calories needed to fuel your physical activities. Your basal metabolic rate is the energy needed to maintain basic body function and comprises about 60 percent of your total caloric needs. The thermic effect of food (TEF. is the number of calories you expend to digest, absorb, and process your food. Roughly 10 percent of the calories you consume are used for these functions. Finally, physical activity is the voluntary activity you engage in and the one that can be changed. The more you exercise, the more calories you will need to meet your energy needs.
