Answer to Question 1

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the amount of the nutrient that will meet the needs of almost every
healthy person in a specic age and gender group. The Adequate Intake (AI) is used when the RDA is not known
because scientic data aren't strong enough to produce a specic recommendation, yet there is enough evidence to
give a general guideline. The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) is the value estimated to satisfy the needs of
50 of people in a given age group. The EAR is used primarily to establish the RDA. The Tolerable Upper Intake
Level (UL) is the maximal amount of a nutrient that a person can take without risking adverse health effects

Answer to Question 2

Vitamins serve many important functions in the body, including regulation of growth and metabolism. The class of
water-soluble vitamins consists of several B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E,
and K. A well-balanced diet provides all of the vitamins known to be necessary for good health, and supplements
containing vitamins are not necessary.
