Answer to Question 1

ANS: Sue is a binge drinker because her consumption of alcohol is more than four drinks in a very short period of time. She is more likely to miss classes, have hangovers, and experience unintentional injuries from falling, motor vehicle accidents, and drowning, and may even die. Binge drinking is associated with hypertension, heart attack, sexually transmitted disease, suicide, homicide, and child abuse. Binge drinkers engage in more unplanned sexual activity. Blackouts and alcohol poisoning are also potential consequences of binge drinking.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: Alcoholism exists when an individual craves alcohol, has developed a higher tolerance for alcohol, cannot control or limit his or her intake once drinking starts, and has developed a dependency on alcohol that will cause physical signs of withdrawal if drinking stops. There is no cure for alcoholism, but it can be treated with medication that helps reduce cravings, self-help therapies, and support groups.
