Your friends routinely spend money on bottled water. In your nutrition class you learned a few reasons why this is unnecessary. What could you tell your friends to convince them that tap water is fine?

ANS: Bottled water is more costly (about 1 to 4 per gallon. and though generally safe, some bottled water is not tested for contaminants. Bottled water does not have to meet the same strict standards as tap water. It may not contain fluoride, which is needed to prevent tooth decay.

ANS: Water is a very important substance in the body. It (1. maintains fluid balance inside the body; (2. acts as a universal solvent (a liquid in which substances dissolve); (3. as part of blood, it helps transport oxygen, nutrients, and other important substances to your cells and transports waste products away from your cells; (4. as part of lymph, it helps transport proteins back to the bloodstream, and transports wastes and microbes through cleaning stations called lymph nodes before the lymph returns to the blood; (5. aids in temperature regulation by absorbing and releasing heat; (6. acts as a lubricant to joints, eyes, and gastrointestinal tract; and (7. is part of the fluid that surrounds certain organs and a developing fetus, protecting them from harm.
