Answer to Question 1

ANS: F

Answer to Question 2

ANS: Authorized health claims are the strongest type of claim and they are based on well-established relationships between the food and the health benefit. They require FDA approval, years of accumulated research, and consensus among scientists and experts in the field. The link between calcium and osteoporosis is an example of an authorized health claim. Health claims based on authoritative statements are claims made by a U.S. government agency, such as the CDC or the NIH. If the FDA approves the claim, the wording of the claim must include may to show that other factors in addition to the food may play a role in the disease or condition. The link between whole grains and the risk of heart disease is an example of a health claim based on authoritative statements. Qualified health claims are less well-established and are based on evidence that is still emerging. However, the current evidence to support the claim is greater than the evidence suggesting that the claim isn't valid. The link between antioxidant vitamins and cancer is an example of a qualified health claim.

Drug abusers experience the following scenario: The pleasure given by their drug (or drugs) of choice is so strong that it is difficult to eradicate even after years of staying away from the substances involved. Certain triggers may cause a drug abuser to relapse. Research shows that long-term drug abuse results in significant changes in brain function that persist long after an individual stops using drugs. It is most important to realize that the same is true of not just illegal substances but alcohol and tobacco as well.
