The reaction in which pyruvate is broken down into acetyl Co-A and a carbon dioxide is not reversible. This means that the cells must produce pyruvate from glycolysis to supply the TCA (Krebs) cycle with Acetyl Co-A in order to make ATP during the electron transport system. If there is not glucose coming into the bloodstream from the diet, the cells must draw on stored glycogen to produce glucose for ATP production from fat as well.
