All bacteria must compete for nutrients and if any one bacteria overgrows the other bacteria present, it could produce toxins or other substances that leads to illness. If the digestive tract is populated with normal flora that does not cause disease, these bacteria will control the growth of disease-causing bacteria that may be introduced by competing for nutrients.
