Answer to Question 1

a

Answer to Question 2

They would have to replenish water, possibly potassium, salt, and glucose as well. Depending on the type of athletic event, the athlete may be able to drink liquids during the event.

Endurance athletes may need more iron than their strength/speed counterparts. Athletes who have higher impact activities such as runners can lose some blood in the soles of their feet or in their intestines. They would need iron to replenish red blood cells and hemoglobin. They would also need to replenish their glycogen stores before their next big event by getting enough carbohydrates. They would maximize their carbohydrate intake and taper their activity before the big event such that they will have enough stored glycogen for fuel during the event.
