Answer to Question 1

Sepsis has historically been defined as an uncontrolled inflammatory response to infection or trauma. It is now understood that sepsis is actually an immunosuppressive process that prevents an adequate response to infection and includes a range of conditions such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome and multi-organ failure. The Society for Critical Care Medicine defines sepsis as the presence (probable or documented) of infection together with systemic manifestations of infection and severe sepsis as sepsis plus infection-induced organ dysfunction or hypoperfusion abnormalities.. Septic shock is defined as severe sepsis with hypotension not reversed with fluid resuscitation and associated with organ dysfunction or hypoperfusion abnormalities..

Answer to Question 2
