There are four basic requirements of an effective immune system: 1) specificity, the ability to react with one and only one antigen, which lowers the chance that a reaction to a pathogen will also harm the person; 2) diversity, so it can respond to many pathogens; 3) adaptivity, the ability to pick the best response to counter the pathogen; and 4) the ability to respond to stimuli not encountered previously.
