Often, clinical manifestations of hyponatremia do not appear until levels of sodium fall below 120 mEq/L. Signs and symptoms that do occur are consistent with changes in osmolality. As serum osmolality falls, water enters the brain cells. Nausea, vomiting, lethargy, confusion, and even seizures can result. All signs and symptoms are more pronounced if hyponatremia occurs rapidly. Laboratory measurements will confirm a serum sodium of <136 meq>
