Answer to Question 1

In general, the ability of the older adult to function well varies from person to person and depends on several factors. The life advantages listed below seem to contribute to good physical and mental health in later years.
Genetic potential for extended longevity. Some persons seem to have inherited a reduced susceptibility to degenerative diseases.
A continued desire for new knowledge and new experiences. Some studies suggest that active minds, ever involved in learning new things, may be more resistant to decline.
Socialization, intimacy, and family integrity. Older persons thrive in situations that nurture love, understanding, shared responsibility, and mutual respect.
Adhering to a healthy diet while avoiding excess food energy, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium. A diet with adequate intakes of all essential nutrients has a positive impact on health and weight management.
 Avoiding substance abuse.
 Acceptable living arrangements.
 Financial independence.
Access to health care, including a family physician, health clinic, public health nursing service providing home health care, dentist, podiatrist, physical therapist, pharmacist, and registered dietitian.

Answer to Question 2

Strategies to Foster Healthful Eating Habits and Happy Mealtimes
These tips may make feeding time easier and more relaxing for both parent and child:
Schedule regular meals and snacks for toddlers; they require frequent feeding to ensure adequate intake of calories and nutrients.
Offer a variety of foods that includes at least one that the child likes.
Remain calm if the child leaves an entire meal untouched.
Do not be concerned about short food jags, stretches of time when the child wants the same food over and over.
Allow the child to eat slowly.
Offer healthful food in a relaxed manner, and children will eat what they need. Try these suggestions for healthful snacking:
Keep plenty of washed and cut raw vegetables in the refrigerator. Team them up with a yogurt or bean dip.
Top frozen waffles and pancakes with fresh fruit for a tasty and refreshing snack.
Make your own frozen juice pops in an ice-cube tray.
Put together a large batch of cereal, pretzel, and nut mix. Divide into individual plastic bags.
