Metabolic tolerance is an increased efficiency of removing high levels of alcohol from the blood due to long-term exposure. It may lead to more drinking and possible addiction.

Functional tolerance is an actual change in sensitivity to a drug. It often results in hallucinations and convulsions when alcohol is withheld.
