Answer to Question 1

From a health standpoint, hard water seems to be the better alternative than soft water. Hard water usually comes from shallow ground and contains relatively high levels of minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Soft water, in contrast, generally flows from deep in the earth and has a higher concentration of sodium. One reason is that the excess sodium carried in soft water, even in small amounts, adds more of that mineral to our already sodium-laden diets. More important, soft water dissolves potentially toxic substances, such as lead, from pipes.
