Answer to Question 1

Studies of the eating habits of different population groups provide some of the knowledge we already have about the diet-cancer connection. Research involving Seventh-Day Adventists, a group of people with a remarkably low death rate from cancers of all kinds, is particularly telling. This religious group has rules against smoking and using alcohol, discourages the use of hot condiments and spices, and encourages a meatless diet. After cancers linked to smoking and alcohol are discounted, these people still have a cancer mortality rate about one-half to two-thirds that of the rest of the population. This may be due to a low consumption of meat and to a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, and cereal grains.
